Erasmus Student Network is a European wide student network, founded in 1990 and build on “students helping students” principle that works for the creation of a mobile and flexible education environment by supporting and developing student exchange and providing an intercultural experience also to those students who cannot access a period abroad. ESN in Latvia is represented by ESN Riga, founded in 2003.

ESN-Riga, as all ESN sections, is a volunteer non governmental, non profit, non religious and non-political organization. ESN-Riga organizes different activities for foreign exchange students in Latvia and Latvian students going abroad and besides local activities is active in the International ESN and international projects.

One of our core activities is maintaining the buddy network. Buddies are mentors for incoming exchange students - their first Latvian friends. All Latvian students, returning form exchange, are offered to share their experience becoming a part of ESN team and/or buddies. Recently we have involved also students just planning to go abroad, thus giving them opportunity to gain intercultural collaboration skills and improve their languages. Before semester starts, we organize special trainings for new buddies; as well ESN Riga provides a recommendation letter for all ESN members and buddies willing to go in exchange.

Each semester starts with an introduction week – activities that help new foreign students to find their way in Riga and make friends with other Latvian and exchange students. During semester we usually have 3 trips, some seminars and a lot of parties.
